The Passing of A True Trailblazer
The Passing of Trailblazer
We are sad to report that one of our dearest friends in wine Serge Hochar of Chateau Musar passed away on January 1st 2015 as a result of a swimming accident whilst on vacation.
Serge really was a force of nature- a loveable rogue with an amazing ability to communicate his passion for life and the unique wines his family makes in the Lebanon.
He had the most wonderful approach to selling his wines and reaching new people- on his last visit to China in November last year, we felt we had worked the 74 year old pretty hard and whilst many of the the other wine-makers he was travelling with were complaining of fatigue.
He took me to one side and complained that he hadn’t met enough New people on the visit!
This after 5 cities in 6 days with events from midday to midnight in each city!!
The problem you see is that once Serge connected with you once then you naturally make time for him when he came back- hence the queues of people at the Decanter event and at the Trailblazers in China recently who all wanted more of his time- those who didn’t know him wanted to meet him- there seemingly weren’t enough hours in the day to reconnect with old friends and make new ones.
His enthusiasm and passion were completely infectious and he rarely told the same story twice- everything came from the heart and soul of this great man- there was no script. Much like his wines- unique, compelling and at times a little beguiling.
Serge we will miss you but we thank you for all the great times we shared- to Mark and your family we send all our heartfelt condolences and we hope that some Father’s magic has rubbed off on us over the years.
