Dr Hermann
Erdener Herzlei Riesling Alte Reben, Grosses Gewachs 2016 2016

TASTING NOTES

Herzlei is a single patch of vine within the legendary Treppchen single vineyard. Along with Treppchen, this land is also already recorded in the first official vineyard classification of 1868 as a top location. To put it simply, this is a Grand Cru within a Grand cru! This "Gewann" or "Katasterlage" classification was not new, but it was only sanctioned by the German government in 2014. Such move in sync with the Burgundian system is definitely another right step for distinctive Mosel wines to shine. Now this land is only 0.5 hectares in total and is a Dr Hermann monopole. This is their family jewel in the crown. The vines are over 100 years old, all ungrafted on predominantly steep red slate hills. Taste wise, candid citrus, peach and pollen with a slight hint of mint on the nose. The Wine is filled with buoyant grapefruit and greengage plums which is backed up with lively acidity. Plenty of structure and mineral depth here. Great finesse on the finish too.

Dr Hermann

Dr. Hermann Winery is managed by the father and son team of Rudi and Christian Hermann. The Hermann’s specialize in Riesling grown on steep rock slopes of the famous vineyards of the Erdener Prälat, Erdener Treppchen, and the Ürziger Würzgarten. All of their vineyards grow exclusively on old vines, ungrafted Riesling vines which deliver beautiful, complex Riesling wines. Their philosophy is that quality starts in the vineyard with restrained pruning, hand harvesting, natural and careful cultivation of vineyard soil. The result is beautiful, elegant wines from some of the most famous vineyard sites in the world.
